RIDIN’ NIGHT WATCH
By Donna Penley I drew short straw, ridin’ watch tonight, circlin’ th’ herd t’ keep ‘em tight; Th’ moon is full an’ shinin’ bight -- An’ all’s right with th’ world. My hoss is watchful, stridin’ loose, ears up an’ a’listenin; T’o th’sounds of th’ bedded herd, horns pointed skyward, hides a’glishenin’. An’ all’s right with th’ world! No night storm is a brewin’ , no heat lightnin’ t’ be seen; Ridin’ night hawk on a night like this is every cowboy’s dream. When all’s right with th’ world! Cows a talkin’ to their calves; steers a callin’ low; Music to a cowpokes ears. Some cowboy’s singin’ down below. An’ all’s right with th’ world!! Th’ smell of sage an’ dew an’ cow - t’ me, they’re just th’ best!; An’ if I had t’ die right now, I’d make just one request -- That all cowpokes a ridin’ night watch be given such a night; When th’ herd ‘s content an’ bedded down, an’ th’ prairie’s lit up bright – AN’ ALL’S RIGHT WITH TH’ WORLD!
