NUGGET
By Donna Penley She’s old an’ kinda homely, but when you look into her soul, You find th’ essence of real beauty -- a Nugget of pure gold. At 28, her horse years make 112 of ours, An’ if I worked as hard as she , I’d be pushin’ up wild flowers. I’d a like t’ seen ol’ Nugget when she was 9 or 10, I’ll bet she was really something’, what a horse she must have been!! An’ I’d like t’ meet th’ man who trained her, I’d like t’ shake his hand, For ol’ Nugget handles like a dream. If you’re horsey, you’ll understand. That horses like ol’ Nugget you can’t find ‘em every day, She’s honest an’ a “keeper”, a true horseman’s horse in every way. It’s said about ol’ cars an’ such, “They don’t make ‘em like that anymore”; That’s how I ‘d paint ol’ Nugget -- she’s a horse an’ much, much more. An’ when her workin’ days are over, oh God, I’d ask y’ please, To put Nugget in Horse Heaven’s pasture, with grass up to her knees! Parsons was a mess this year, th’ horses slogging through th’ mud, An’ I thought I heard a horse whinny from somewhere up above -- I believe it was ol’ Nugget’s whinny. I swear that I did hear Her chuckle to herself an’ say -- “Glad I didn’t make th’ trip this year!” NUGGET, WE’LL NEVER FORGET YOU! Copyright Protected
